Unlike most anime, akira's japanese dialog was recorded before the animation work was completed, much like an american animation. At one point in the anime, a man in black appears, and kaneda immediately asks if he'd just come back from a funeral. Akira is a classic anime movie made in the 1980's that pioneered the anime industry.

My partner tells me that the anime series neon genesis evangelion is even better and darker than akira though.
